February; Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

“Fire and Ice”, by Robert Frost

This week on The Spiral Dance we honor February, Fire and Ice. February is the second month of the Gregorian calendar, and the year’s shortest month. It’s named for the FEBRUA, a Roman purification festival. And so we’ll talk a bit about the Roman God, Februus later in the show. The astrological sign of Aquarius, January 20 - February 18th is associated with February. Aquarius, the Water-Bearer, is a fixed Air sign ruled by the planet Uranus.

February’s full moon is known as the Snow Moon, because the month is known for having powerful storms. Still, nature begins to sense the turning of the year, and the coming spring. House finches begin looking for nesting sites, and in the still-frozen woodland foxes begin searching for a mate. But Puxatany Phil reminds us that if he sees his shadow on February 2, it means six more weeks of winter. This is in keeping with in ancient lore of Imbolc saying that if the weather is Fair on February 2, then Winter will last for six more weeks. The lesson tells us that, despite the lengthening days and the Promise of Spring, we still, for the time-being must give Winter it’s due.

Fire and Ice appear as primal forces in the Norse creation myth, which we’ll be taking a look at. And I also want to read a traditional story from Iceland story called “The Snow Daughter and the Fire Son”. Plus I’ll share a poem about Fire and Ice from Robert Frost.

Plus, we’ll ask the Goddess Bridget to help us transform our anger into creativity. Then, we’ll talk about Leap Day, February 29th. Listen in!

This week on The Spiral Dance, we celebrate Imbolc, which will occur on Tuesday, February Second. It’s a little bit early, I know. I’ll be having another show on Feb 1, and I was thinking maybe I should do my Imbolc show then. But I know that a lot of you like to use things from my show for your rituals. So, I figured having the show a week early gives you the chance to listen and decide if there is anything you might want to use.

Imbolc is half-way between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, and it’s a primary Cross Quarter Holiday Sacred to the Goddess Brigid.

Plus, might the story of Sleeping Beauty have some lessons appropriate for Imbolc? Listen in!

The Wild Hunt; It's a Doggy Dawg World

This week on The Spiral Dance, we’re goin’ to the dogs!

We’ll start with the tradition of The Wild Hunt. The figure central to the Wild Hunt is the hound, and it’s directly related to the Christian idea of Hounds from Hell. Among mortals, seeing the Wild Hunt was thought to presage some catastrophe such as war or plague, or at best the death of the one who witnessed it. But, of course, there’s more to it than that.

The role of the Dog as Spiritual Messenger dates back about 5,000 years. Irish writers John and Caitlin Mathews say the dog is known as “Those Who’s Memory is Longest and Who Can Penetrate the Depths of Time”.

Any Pagan dog-lover will tell you that dogs are just as enchanting as any feline. The dog has a long history of magickal talent – including helping humans raise energy, celebrating seasonal rituals, and guarding shamanic journeys into the otherworld. If you’d like to team up with your own mystical mutt, listen along as I offer some tips for you to consider.

And, in the second part of the show, a story that sounds just a little bit like “Little Red Riding Hood”, this one is “Werewolf” by Angela Carter. I hope you enjoy the show!

Arthur and Merlin

This week on The Spiral Dance, we’ll take a special look at the Once and Future King, Arthur.

Who was King Arthur? Is there an historical Arthur, and if so, how different is he from the Arthur of Legend? To answer some of these questions, I want to share with you some excerpts from an article by British historian David Nash Ford called “Arthur, King of the Britons”.

From there, we’ll look at the Arthur of Pop Legend, and we’ll look a bit more closely at the roots of that legend.

And, who’s your favorite Arthurian character? Arthur himself? Gwenivere? Maybe Morgan le Fey?
Merlin, of course, is certainly a favorite of mine. So, we’ll take a look at Merlin’s story as well. I want to share a story with you. This is a contemporary story written by RJ Stewart, and it’s called “Merlin and Nimue”.
